where did i find that? - pink grandfather clock!

as it turns out, lofts have very large walls.  very long & very tall walls.  finding neat items to decorate these huge walls can be rather challenging.  but i found the neatest idea on one of my fave blogs, cupcakes & cashmere : patterned wall decals from blik!  our first attempt at the way lofty & awesome world of blik is this grandfather clock.  blakey even let me get the hot pink one.  my husband rocks.

step 1: THE RUB.  firmly press down on the backing to shift graphic onto the transfer paper.  don't hesitate to give it some gusto.

step 2: ROLL-MUSH-PULL: start at one corner & slowly peel away the paper backing with a rolling action.

step 3: GET YOUR BLIK ON: hold two corners of the transfer tape & stick to your desired location.  be careful it's straight.  leaning grandfather clocks are no where near as cool as leaning towers. smooth away.

step 4: ROLL-MUSH-PULL THE SEQUEL: now that the graphic is applied, it's time to remove the tape.  say a prayer it actually sticks & roll away.

step 5: SHAZZAM!  one-of-a-kind-art.  & we got this super fabulous clock from crate & barrel to contrast the bright clock quite well, i must say.  {how many of you actually believe i hung the clock?  you are wrong.  but great photo op.}  {oh extra side note: i'm standing on a step stool.  the total height of the grandfather clock is almost 7.5 feet tall.}

THE FINAL SUPER AWESOME PRODUCT:

yay loft decorations!!

what neat stuff have you found?

intern party!

the greatest OBGYN party was this weekend - the intern party!  interns, residents, attendings, & spouses all gathered at a beautiful house in mountain brook to celebrate the new class with wine & cheese, appetizers, & sweets!  the party & the people were absolutely wonderful.  one of the most adorable older docs "told me a funny" about my husband - a phrase my grandfather uses all of the time.  big 12 & SEC football were discussed at length, including our joint dislike for florida & mr. tebow's jorts.  our puppies were a highlight in convo, as always.  & our secret or not-so-secret desire to see step up 3D was revealed.  fabulous party.  fabulous people.

my lovely & amazing husband volunteered me to make desserts for the party... for 50 people.  so i took the afternoon off from my job & got to work.  it took so much longer than expected & i had a few slip ups (luckily the coffee maker wasn't plugged in when i spilled water all over the counter & luckily i didn't actually like that pillow i dropped black frosting onto), but it was seriously a grand task!  tanky & i laughed all the way through & enjoyed every crazy moment.

the menu:
my favorite super moist lemon cake with my dear friend emily's buttercream frosting.
my first attempt at red velvet from scratch cupcakes with an always yummy creamcheese frosting.
& my husband's all-time favorite dark chocolate brownies with a pecan twist.

yummy blueberry crumblies!

ooh ooh ooh, this is the perfect summer delight!  & i have two modes of proof:

1.) i originally found the recipe on cupcakesandcashmere.com {here}, who found the recipe on smittenkitchen.com {here}, who found the recipe on allrecipes.com {here}.  all very well-respected sites.
2.) blakey & i ate the entire pan in 3 days.  not lying.

so go find your local farmers market & buy some beautiful, delicious, summer-worthy blueberries & make this treat for you & a loved one.  enjoy!

blueberry crumblies!
{note:  the original title of "blueberry crumb bars" is not fitting for us.
they never made it into "bar" form at our home.
crumblies is more accurate.}

1 c sugar
3 c flour
1 tsp baking powder
1/4 tsp salt
zest of 1 lemon
2 sticks cold {but not too cold} unsalted butter
1 egg
1/2 c sugar
4 tsp cornstarch
juice of 1 lemon
4 c fresh blueberries

1. preheat oven to 375 degrees.  grease a 9x13 pan.

2. in a large bowl {my bowl was no where near large enough}, stir together 1c sugar, flour, & baking powder.  mix in salt & lemon zest.  use a pastry cutter {or strong fork} to blend in the butter & egg.  the dough should get crumbly.  {good luck with that.  hopefully pastry arts school is going to teach me this art.}  pat half of the dough into prepared pan.

3. in another large bowl, stir together 1/2c sugar, cornstarch, & lemon juice.  gently mix in blueberries.  sprinkle blueberry mixture evenly over the crust.  crumble remaining dough over the berry layer.

4. bake for 45-60 minutes, or until top is slightly brown.  cool completely before cutting into squares.  {good luck getting to this step.}  smittenkitchen.com adds: these are easiest to cut once chilled & store even better in the fridge than they do at room temp.

green beans & mushrooms - a delicious & super easy side dish.

hello friends!  you are in for a treat today.  i will be the first to admit that this dish doesn't sound like anything special.  in fact, it sounds more like my mother making me eat my vegetables than anything i want to eat on my own will.  but blakey loves green beans & making something healthy every once in awhile is probably a good idea, so i tried it out.  trust me - this is fantastic.

green beans & mushrooms
originally from taste of home magazine

1/3 lb fresh green beans
1c fresh mushrooms, sliced
1 T evoo
1 T butter
1/4 tsp dried parsley flakes
dash each of seasoned salt, garlic powder, & pepper
1 T {maybe more} dry bread crumbs
1 1/2 tsp grated romano cheese {definitely a hard cheese}

1. trim green beans.  {i had not done this before, so i cut off the ends that i didn't want to eat.}

2. place beans in a small saucepan and cover with water.  bring to a boil.  cover and cook for 4-7 minutes or until crisp-tender.

2. meanwhile, in a small skillet, saute mushrooms in oil & butter until tender.  stir in parsley, seasoned salt, garlic powder, & pepper.  {hint:  less is WAY MORE on the garlic powder.  i LOVE garlic.  but trust me.}  add bread crumbs; cook until lightly browned.

3. drain beans; toss with mushroom mix. sprinkle with cheese.  {hint #2:  another believe it or not but please believe it:  it really needs very little cheese. hard for us lovers o' cheese.}  & serve right away!  {hint #3:  so so much better immediately after mixing.}

ps.  our pretty sunset while making dinner.  not an oklahoma sunset, but it made me smile anyway.

what delicious healthy recipes do you love?

fuchsia monkeys are #1.

fantasy football season has begun!  draft day for our original league - the hot gates - was yesterday. this league is full of blake & my best friends from high school, some of our new air force buddies, & a couple siblings.  last year was my fourth (i think...) year to play but my FIRST to make it into the play-offs.  & then i beat mr. zach uber to get third place!!  only girl in the league. oh yeah.

the fuchsia monkeys kicked some serious bum on draft day.  other than a sad QB, we have some solid players - offense & defense.  in fact, i have THE highest projected score for week one.  should be a solid year for the fuchsia monkeys.  be scared, boys.

a few moments during the big draft:

hope you had a fantastic weekend!
